Leak Detection - Meter Test

This test should be conducted for a 30 minute period, during which time no water is being used on the property.

  1. A dripping tap/hose bib can lose up to 680 litres a month or 8,170 litres per year.
  2. Write down the numbers indicated on the meter at the start of this test.
  3. Return to check the meter reading after 30 minutes have passed.
  4. If the numbers have not changed, you do not have a leak in your pressurized water system.
  5. If the numbers are moving this indicates you have an internal leak and you should contact a licensed plumber to inspect your system.

How to Read Your Water Meter
watermeter
  • Your water meter is located in a box at the front corner of your property.
  • Lift the lid and clean the plastic covering to expose the black and red numbers;
  • Read the numbers from left to right.
  • There is a range of different meters in use but, with each model the black numbers register kilolitres (kL) and the red numbers register litres.
  • The black digits are what you need to record.

Record Your Water Usage

Record the meter reading and check again after seven days at about the same time. The difference between the first and second reading is your weekly water consumption. Divide by seven to estimate daily usage.
